James Daly

James Firman Daly (born 23rd October 1918 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin) is best known in the Apes universe
for playing Dr Honorius, Deputy Minister of Justice, in Planet Of The Apes (1968).



During the 1930s, James Daly studied drama and performed on stage before serving with the United States Navy as World War II ended. Daly was a music major at the University of Wisconsin, a drama major at Iowa State University, and attended Carroll College before receiving a degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Cornell College later presented him with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.

Between 1953 and 1955 Daly appeared in the TV series Foreign Intrigue. He also guest starred on many television series, among them Appointment with Adventure, Breaking Point, Mission: Impossible, The Twilight Zone, The Tenderfoot, The Road West, Custer, Gunsmoke, Combat, The Fugitive, The Virginian, and Twelve O'Clock High. He portrayed Mr Flint (an apparently immortal human) in the Star Trek episode Requiem for Methuselah (1969).


Between 1969 and 1976 Daly appeared in the CBS drama series Medical Center as Dr Paul Lochner.


In addition to his acting career, Daly was one of the hosts on NBC Radio's weekend Monitor program in 1963-1964.

He was the brother of Tyne Daly, who played Mary Beth Lacey in Cagney & Lacey.

Following his appearance in Planet Of The Apes Daly appeared in The Five Man Army and The Big Bounce (both 1969).






Daly's last screen role was as Mr Boyce in the mini-series Roots: The Next Generations (1979).


James Daly died of heart failure in Nyack, New York, aged 59, on 3rd July 1978.
